Tower of Babel

Look at this edifice I have created for us
Behold the ruin surrounding it
All for you
All for you, my love.
It wasn't easy
And it wasn't fun
But I destroyed every daffodil
And crushed every fern
Amazing how brown the sky can be
From the hand of one man
The children, oh the children
I took no pleasure in their deaths
But you had to have your edifice

You look around in awe
Higher than any man's been before
While still connected to God's forsaken earth
Perhaps in horror, perhaps in awe
And a single sob
Perhaps in sadness, perhaps in joy
Escapes your eye
Then wrenches out your throat

My love, oh my love
Will I have to cast you down too?
Will I lose you as well?
For this was all for you.
Twenty years I lost to sweat-browed pain
All for you
All for you
All for you.
